Dear Parents/Carers,

A warm welcome back to the new academic year!

Firstly, I would like to extend a special Marus Bridge welcome to all our new children and families. We are looking forward to getting to know you over the coming term and ensuring that every child feels safe, happy and successful each day. Please all give your children a huge well done for such a fantastic start to the new term. We have been delighted to see children looking so smart and settling so quickly into their new classes.

💻 School Website and Communication

I will aim to write to you on a fortnightly basis, but there are other ways in which we share information and celebrate our children. Firstly, all statutory information can be found on our website, including key dates, term dates, policies, links to the Rowan Learning Trust website, school lunch information and a range of useful advice and guidance. ParentMail will continue to be used for important messages, bookings and payments.

Over the next few weeks, teachers will share key information about class routines and learning for the term ahead via SeeSaw. We use this for class updates, celebrations and to respond to quick queries. (As you will appreciate, staff are not expected to respond in the evenings or on weekends/holidays). If a longer conversation is ever required, please arrange a call back through the school office. As a reminder, our school leaders are also available to support you if required:

📅 Autumn Parents' Evening

Our first Parents' Evening of the year will take place on Monday 19 October and Tuesday 20 October. Details about how to book appointments will be sent via ParentMail later this month.

✅ Start of Term Reminders

🏷️ Please ensure all uniform, coats and water bottles are clearly labelled.

🚗 Please park safely and considerately, avoiding local residents' driveways.

🛝 Please encourage children not to play on school equipment before school.

📚 Reading

Teaching children to read, so that they can read to learn and experience the joy of books, remains one of our most important priorities. Thank you for supporting reading at home. Those few minutes spent reading together can make a huge difference.

📝 Statutory Assessments

Certain year groups complete National Curriculum statutory assessments during the academic year. This is a way of measuring the school's effectiveness. Guidance about these can be found in the link below.

⭐ Attendance

Excellent attendance continues to be a key priority for the Government, OFSTED, the local authority and our school. Thank you for your continued support in helping children attend regularly and arrive on time each day. Every school day counts, and being in school gives children the very best opportunity to learn, enjoy and achieve their potential.

🍽️ School Lunches

Don't forget that school lunches are free for all children from Reception to Year 2 and remain excellent value from Year 3 onwards. Our meals are tasty, well balanced and can make mornings a little easier for busy families too. If you have any questions, please contact the school office.

Dear Parents/Carers,

The children had a ball on world book day! Whether dressed up in costume, or dressed down in PJs, they enjoyed and engaged in all the fun. The primary aim is always to reinforce and ignite a passion for books and the beauty of turning a page in anticipation of what is coming next! Thanks to you for your support at home, all the teachers for getting involved and Mrs Holden for sharing all the resources. See pics on the socials 🙂.

Parents' Evening and Book Fair WB 16/3/26

The book fair will run every night that week after school in the hall and late on the parents' evening nights. If you have not booked a parents' evening slot, please contact your child's teacher via SeeSaw.

Quick reminders:

I have contacted Wigan Council (transport unit) regarding the inconsistency of crossing patrols on Highfield Grange. In the meantime, please take extra care on the crossings; I have reiterated this to the children in assembly.
Similarly, please encourage children to wear helmets when cycling to school, no matter the age. I am really impressed with the Y6s, who are great role models in doing this.

Message from the Planet Protectors

We are taking part in the Big Plastic Count. From the 9^th to the 15^th March the children will be counting every piece of plastic that is recycled or goes in the bin. They will be bringing home a recording sheet on Monday 9th March. Please pop this on your fridge and help your child count and record the plastic.

Parent Survey

Please look out for our parent survey coming soon, with some key questions relating to our service to you, improvements we can make and also our PSHCE curriculum offer, which is currently under review following recent updates. There will be a QR code to scan on tables at parents' evening to access the survey.

Back in October, children from Y1 - Y6 had an amazing time working with local artist - Victoria Hough - to create a bespoke piece of art that depicts our school values and here is the incredible result! We are sure you will agree it looks spectacular!

Year 6H enjoyed a fun DT afternoon measuring, cutting and assembling their own truss bridges using triangles to make their structure stable. We then tested them by adding weight to see which one was the strongest and didn’t collapse. A great job!

Dear Parents/Carers,

We've had visits from dragons, dinosaurs and directors this week, the latter being directors of the Rowan Learning Trust. They visited classes with me and again pointed out the kind, enthusiastic and inquisitive nature of our children. We are looking forward to showing school off to our new school governors next week too!

Lovely seeing you on the gates each morning (I try to alternate between them). If you ever have a message or want to ask something, please just grab me, or Mrs Bish, who is also outside most mornings.

On the same theme, staff aim to be on the door primarily to greet children and take any quick/urgent messages each morning. It is a busy time, so for anything else, please message via SeeSaw or go via the office to arrange a phone call, so that proper time and consideration can be given.

Thank yous!

Thank you so much for your commitment to pupil attendance, we have seen an uptick this term even with some sickness, so hopefully we can continue with this upward trend. Thankyou also for the Lego and Brio track donations, already greatly appreciated by our lovely EYFS pupils! Thank you finally to Barbara, our school crossing patrol officer, for her wonderful service over the years. She finishes in her role today - goodbye and good luck for the future!

Free School Meal Application

How to apply for free school meals if you think you may be entitled:

Parents you can access the application via this link FSM Application Website or go to our school’s website and complete the form online.

One of the first steps is selecting the school your child attends. To help avoid incorrect selections, they have included each school’s full name and address.
Parents can include multiple children on the same application, provided all listed children have the same parental responsibility arrangements.
They ask for a few details about each child (year group, date of birth, and home postcode).
At the end of the application, parents are informed of the expected timescales.
Once the check is complete, they we will notify school. School will inform parents of the result.
If you have difficulties using the online form please contact Mrs Bish, Pastoral Manager, who can assist you or submit the details on your behalf

We are very proud of the fantastic reading that has taken place this term! Our Reading Rewards are designed to celebrate consistent home reading throughout the year:

Bronze Award – achievable during the Autumn Term
Silver Award – achievable during the Spring Term
Gold Award – achievable by the end of the Summer Term

A huge well done to all the children who achieved their Bronze Award this term for their amazing commitment to reading at home. We are very proud of you!

For children who didn’t quite manage to reach Bronze this time, there is still every opportunity to achieve it next term. Keep going—you can do it!

This week, our Y2s have enjoyed an online 'Festive Farming Workshop'. They learnt all about how Christmas Trees are farmed and where our festive sprouts come from!
