Sunshine Room

You may have heard your children or staff talking about The Sunshine Room—a space that has grown and evolved throughout this academic year into our school’s dedicated ‘safe space’. It’s a calm, nurturing environment where children can go for a variety of reasons, including:

Small group work

Speech & Language sessions

Social stories and sensory circuits

Fine motor activities

Or simply a bit of TLC when the day feels overwhelming

This space is proving to be an invaluable part of our provision for a number of our children of whom have additional needs, while also supporting many pupils at different points in their learning journey. As an emotionally friendly school, we are committed to promoting mental health, self-regulation, and independence. From September 2025, the Sunshine Room will be staffed full-time by a trained and experienced member of our team, working closely with our SENDCo to ensure every child receives the support they need.

When children are accessing the Sunshine Room, they receive personalised, intensive teaching tailored to their EHCPs or individual learning plans. We allocate session blocks for children across the school who require this support. Additionally, some children may access the room on a more flexible basis if they need a break or a quieter space during the day.

Importantly, all children who use the Sunshine Room remain fully involved in school life. They join their classmates for most lessons, playtimes, lunchtimes, assemblies, and school trips—helping to build friendships and positive relationships. The level of integration varies depending on each child’s needs, attention and listening skills, and ability to access the curriculum.

Curriculums in the Sunshine Room are based on
developmental stage, not age, and include continuous provision and outdoor learning opportunities to support curriculum engagement and progress.

This shared space reflects our commitment to nurturing the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally. It offers a calm, supportive environment where children can thrive. Whether a child needs a short break, targeted intervention, or a more structured learning space, the Sunshine Room is there to meet those needs. We are incredibly proud of how this provision is growing and the positive impact it is already having on our pupils. As always, we thank you for your continued support in helping us put children’s wellbeing and progress at the heart of everything we do.
